Your recovery is just as important as your procedure. Following these post-op care instructions will help you heal properly, reduce discomfort, and prevent complications. Every patient heals differently—but these guidelines will give you a clear path to a smooth recovery. If you have any concerns, reach out to our office.
Immediate Post-Surgery Care
After surgery, a responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Getting enough rest is essential. Plan to take it easy for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities, bending over, or heavy lifting for at least a few days to minimize swelling and bleeding. If you received anesthesia, do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours.
Managing Discomfort and Pain
Mild discomfort is normal after surgery. To manage pain effectively:
- Take prescribed pain medications as directed
- Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen for mild to moderate pain
- Apply ice packs to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals for the first 24-48 hours
If the pain worsens after the first two days, or it does not improve, contact our office.
Bleeding Control
Some bleeding is normal within the first 24 hours. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes to help form a clot. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze and continue applying pressure. Keeping your head elevated will also help reduce bleeding. Avoid spitting, drinking through a straw, or smoking, as these can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
Eating and Drinking
For the first few days, stick to soft foods and liquids. Good options include yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and smoothies (without a straw). Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods that could irritate the surgical site. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, while avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
Oral Hygiene
Keeping your mouth clean helps prevent infection. Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the surgical site. Rinse with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) several times a day, especially after meals. Do not use commercial mouthwashes unless directed.
Activity Restrictions
Give your body time to heal before resuming normal activities. Avoid heavy lifting and intense exercise for at least a few days. If you experience throbbing or increased bleeding after activity, rest and avoid further strain. It’s best to gradually return to normal routines as you feel comfortable.
Medications
If prescribed, take antibiotics exactly as directed to prevent infection. Complete the full course, even if you feel better. Use pain relievers as instructed. If for some reason you experience side effects to the medicine, contact our office for guidance.
Follow-Up Care
We may schedule a follow-up visit to monitor your healing. Watch for any of these symptoms and contact us if they occur:
- Excessive bleeding that does not stop
- Severe pain not relieved by medication
- Signs of infection, including fever, swelling, or pus
If you have any concerns, we are here to support you. Following these instructions will help you recover smoothly and get back to feeling like yourself. Call our office with any questions, or to schedule your follow-up appointment.
