Corrective Jaw Surgery

Jaw misalignment can affect everything from eating to breathing. Corrective jaw surgery realigns the jaws to improve function, relieve pain, and enhance facial balance.

At Alta Oral Facial Surgery & Dental Implants, our experienced surgeons specialize in orthognathic surgery, using advanced techniques to achieve lasting results.

What is Corrective Jaw Surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery repositions the jaw to improve your jaw’s alignment and function. This procedure is recommended when orthodontics alone cannot correct severe bite issues. It helps treat:

  • Bite problems; including overbite, underbite, or open bite
  • Facial asymmetry or jaw imbalance
  • TMJ pain or chronic jaw discomfort
  • Obstructive sleep apnea caused by airway obstruction
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking

By improving how the jaws fit together, this procedure promotes better oral health and enhanced quality of life.

Signs You May Need Corrective Jaw Surgery

Jaw misalignment isn’t always obvious. Some people experience symptoms for years before realizing they need treatment. A few signs include:

  • Frequent jaw pain or headaches
  • Difficulty biting or chewing
  • Speech problems caused by misaligned teeth or jaw positioning
  • Facial asymmetry or a protruding/receding jaw
  • Breathing issues, especially during sleep

A consultation with one of our oral and maxillofacial surgeons can determine if this treatment is right for you.

The Surgical Process

Consultation and Planning

Your initial consultation includes X-rays, 3D imaging, and a detailed examination of your bite and jaw alignment. Many patients undergo orthodontic treatment before surgery to properly position their teeth.

Surgery

Performed under general anesthesia, the procedure involves repositioning the jawbones and securing them with small plates and screws. Depending on how complex it is, surgery typically lasts two to four hours.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients experience swelling and mild discomfort for the first few weeks. Pain can be managed with medication, and a soft food diet for the first few weeks after surgery is essential to your healing. Full recovery can take several months—but we’ll check in during our follow-up appointments to make sure everything is progressing smoothly.
